In the contest of the Call for Project by Made in Trieste, M3DATEK submitted two Joint research and development projects in partnership with the Cardiovascular Biology Group of the International Center for Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology (ICGEB) in Trieste, the Plastic Surgery Unit of the University Hospital of Trieste (ASUITS) and the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Trieste.
The first project, in association with ICGEB and ASUITS, is ADHERE, A biocompatible Device for wound HEaling and REvascularization, that aims at the development of a novel therapeutic approach, based on the combined delivery of i) the VEGF gene, which is the main triggers of angiogenesis, but also protects the skeletal muscle and promotes its regeneration, ii) autologous endothelial cells embedded in a biocompatible matrix scaffold.
The second project, in association with the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Trieste, is HELP for smart, 3D bioprinted wound dressings, and points to the development of an innovative wound dressing containing HELPs (human elastin-like polypeptides) conjugated with growth factors that could be smartly released in the presence of elastolytic activity, such as in several pathologic conditions related to skin injuries, like chronic inflammation of difficult-to-heal wounds and lesions.
M3DATEK has enthusiastically accepted both collaboration proposals, willing to contribute to project with its state-of-the-art know how and technological platform for the development of innovative active dressings, as medical devices, obtained through the 3D printing of patented natural biopolymers.
Both projects were awarded with a one-year grant for two young researchers.
